The College Info Center provides information and assistance about higher education opportunities to students and families throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. Based in the Martin Luther King., Jr. Memorial Library, the Center is a resource for a people seeking a wide range of postsecondary opportunities, with a special focus on outreach to families who have been traditionally underrepresented in higher education.
Volunteer College Advisors:
- Provide basic information about college, career and financial aid opportunities to potential students of all ages
- Assist CIC visitors with using print and computerized resources to identify schools and programs that match their needs
- Assist visitors with the decidion-making process, helping them evaluate options and determine appropriate choices
- Assist visitors with completing college admission and financial aid applications
- Facilitate basic CIC orientation sessions for small groups of students and families
- Assist with projects that involve updating information or expanding resources
- May facilitate workshops and information sessions, if interested
Qualifications: Professional experience/training providing postsecondary, financial aid and/or career information and assistance to students and families; familiarity with Internet and computer applications; Interest in working with families who have been traditionally underrepresented in higher education. Able to commit to 6-8 hours per month as a daytime volunteer and 4 hours per month as an evening volunteer. On average, volunteers are at the CIC every other week.
